Just to add to what everyone else says, I would like to say that we did the gf/cf diet in isolation from any other treatments other than our Son Rise Program. I would recommend that you do this, since the diet can be somewhat costly and is difficult to comply with when you are on the road. We started by going cf for one week and then gf the next, in stages. First week of gf was wheat, then oats, barley and rye.

We started this on August 1, 1999. We did not mention what we were doing to our son Nick, we just went ahead with it. We noticed an improvement within the first week, although I understand that this is not always the case. By the end of the second week we told Nick what we were doing. The amazing part is that he realized that this diet was really helping him, and wanted to stay gf/cf! It was as though a fog had been lifted from his thoughts.

We used to eat pizza two or more nights a week. When we went to the Mexican restaurant Nick would only eat the fresh flour tortillas. Now, he knows that all of this is not good for him, and most of the time he avoids it on his own. He thinks that pizza is bad for everyone!

When Nick returned to school in late August he was able to understand much more of what was going on than last summer. Much of this improvement, I believe, is attributable to his Son Rise Program, and the diet helped in the playroom also.

We have found a lot of foods are gf/cf. There are cereals at the health food stores, and lots of wheat substitutes. There are wheat free pastas. Nick likes meat and we have been experimenting with different vegatables. One of his favorites is McDonald's french fries. He also loves rice, and a snack called Mochi that we get from the health food store.

I would also recommend the organic acid test from Great Plains lab. From this test we found that Nick had a yeast overgrowth. I was not surprised, since this frequently accompanies the leaky gut that Bram mentions. The dietary approach to help here was to limit sugar intake, since this is what the yeast loves. We were already limiting sugar to just fruits, but now we are down to one fruit a day. This change also brought a remarkable improvement, along with the supplement acidopholus, which replaces the yeast with beneficial bacteria. The great thing about the organic acid test is that they get a profile of your child, and can make some specific recommendations.

One supplement that I have been recently reading about is calle Seren-Aid. This is supposed to help the digestion of gluten and cassein. Has anyone tried this? What have the results been?
