: I know alot of your kids are on the gluten-casein free diet and I'm hoping you can help me find info. on this diet. Web sites, perhaps? : What results have you seen with this diet? How easy is it finding products that meet the criteria? : If we were to begin, how long before we could reasonably expect to see results? : Also, what is the theory behind it? : Lots of questions, I know, but I figure I've got "the experts" here reading this board, so I'm taking advantage!! :)
: Thanks in advance,
: Eileen
Eileen,
E-mail me atand I'll send you a sample menu we use for our son and our "info packet" on most other treatments.
I would start out slow with this diet or you probably won't stick to it. It is challenging at first, but after a few months it really gets easy. Start with Dairy products. You should see results within a few days if this is a problem. Dairy is generally much easier to eliminate than wheat products.
Next try the wheat products. Again, I would start out slow. This is a tougher step. At least it was for us. Results from this can take months, and some say even a year to see changes.
What have I seen? It is difficult to say for sure what helped the most because we started probiotics, eliminated sugars, and tried secretin, all within the same time of starting the diet. We had some good improvments in language, eye contact, and awareness. Again, I can't say the diet alone did that. It probably would be a false statement. No, I think it was a combination that was needed. It has been about a year now and I don't plan on changing back. Brenen is clearly a gut kid (as I believe almost all autistic kids are, diarhea or not) and his stool is pretty much normal now. It was runny for well over a year and probably closer to two. He still gets "soft creamy" stools once in a while, but mostly now are "firm and brown". I don't believe his gut is healed completley, but it is much better than it was.
The Opiod excess theory:
OK, I'm tired tonight and no expert on this Eileen, but here goes. Be sure to NOT trust me %100 and look into this from other sources as well!
Gluten and casien are protiens broken down in the body into peptides known as gluteomorphine and casomorphine respectivley. Notice the end of these words, morphine. Anyway, most people are able to further break these peptides down into usable amino acids, or at least eliminate them from the gut without having problems. The theory goes something like this. Autistic kids have "holes" in their intestinal membranes and the dangerous peptides are able to get into the bloodstream and go to receptor sites on the brain for morphine. Thus, many kids seem to have no/minimal pain responses. Obviously if you were on a morphine high your entire childhood, it would be fairly difficult to learn! There is much evidence to back this theory and I believe it without a doubt. Brenen was not cured from this, but one thing that was very obvious after the diet was that he actually started to cry from physical pain again. I mean he would fall or hit his head and no response! After the diet, same event, but it hurt!
Is this the only step?
No way! The gut must be healed. Great, we stopped the "morphine effect", but what about other toxins? In my limited non-medical opinion, the ultimate goal must be to fully cure the gut first. Once we do that, these foods should not be an issue. All of the allergies we constantly hear about are caused by a problem in the immune system. Fix the gut and I bet the "allergies" go away. What about metals? Most if not all autistic kids have high toxic metal levels. Why? Probably from the inability to NOT absorb these because the gut cannot filter it out. Where do metals effect? The brain! What about bacteria and viruses? Did one of these cause the gut problem to begin with? Since the gut has lost it's ability to defend from invaders our kids now have constant immune challenges that surely must tax their systems. What about the waste products from these "bugs"? They must be going into the bloodstream as well and into our kids brains. Again, fix the gut first, if possible, then "clean" out the system.
How do we fix the gut? That's the billion dollar question is it not? That is why my wife and I started our Not For Profit Foundation, to fund research in that area. There is reasearch in this area, but it is drastically underfunded, understaffed, and underrated for the potential to help/cure.
Simple answers that seem to work in at least some way are probiotics, immune system enhancers (vit c, cholostrum, ect.) E-mail me for a list. This is the long hard way for now. There is a better cure out there. We just need to find it.
Eillen, I hope this was some help. Lastly, and always, love and accept your child for where they are today and always at the same time want them to continue to grow. Good luck, Bram
