Hi Eileen- The gluten-free casein-free diet is definitely worth a try, though it does require some getting used to! There are urine tests for peptides that can help determine if your child is a strong candidate for needing the diet; a DAN doctor can help you with that. (If you're not familiar with DAN (Defeat Autism Now), check the Autism Research Institute's website.)

As far as the diet goes, there are some really good products and cookbooks out there to help you out. Most health food stores and many grocery stores sell gluten-free products, such as frozen waffles, rice and other flours, cookies, breads, etc. Some are pretty good! There are websites selling such products (one I found recently is called Gluten Solutions; they have yummy pretzels!)A woman named Bette Hagman has written a series of cookbooks called "The Gluten-Free Gourmet;" generally very good recipes and pretty easy to do.

We've done this diet to varying degrees for over 2 years with my son. We have never seen MAJOR changes as a result. It does appear that he can handle moderate amounts of wheat; we notice that when he has a lot he tends to be moodier and "fuzzier." So we tend to stay gluten and dairy-free where we can, but aren't afraid to make exceptions. Many people find that they have to be strict to make it work; it's different for everyone.

Good luck!

Jane
