: Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to the message board, I have been very very very busy writing my paper!!!
: I think that many of you have completely misunderstood what I have been asking. I completely believe in the Son-Rise program, in fact I have been telling parents of autistic children about it left and right. I can not say more good things about it!!! Just today I told a mother of an autistic teenager (he's almost 13 I think)about it. I gave her the web-sight, and told her about it! With all my heart Ibelieve that Son-Rise has and can cure people with autism. The one problem I have with it however is that unlike many of the other interventions for autism, Son-Rise does not have any scientific statistics to prove that they have a cure. They simply have many parents, friends, and volunteers who like myself believe in the program, and have seen that it can work. But what about all the people out there who have never worked with a child doing the Son-Rise program? They (my english teacher for example) do not believe the statements in the brochure that parents have made regarding their children's progress. But when I asked a representative from Son-Rise, I was told that it was because "don't have the resources, or the energy, or the time to be able to do anything with that information right now. If families who want to work with us, we are busy trying to help them" (Levy). So, I asked them why not open up more Autism treatment centers (Son-Rise) all over the world? If they did that they would have more resources and more time. But I was told that that they do not have statistics becasue, "basically we decided a long time ago that we would rather do less work than work with everyone and do it at a low quality. Right now, we don't have a huge amount of teachers, but the teachers that we have, we think are fantastic. And so, we want only to have fantastic people working and doing this at least under our endorsement. Because otherwise then it loses its power, and then it is not useful anyway. That is a decision we made and we actually feel real good about it and hopefully just what you are talking about will happen, but it is not going to happen anytime real soon either, because defiantly there are a lot of people to train before we are there" (Levy). This comment just sounded a little odd to me. I understand that a program like thins could loose its power; however, it also could not! I think that if they were to branch out, they would in fact have more staff. This is because people want to work where they live and not have to move. Since the program is currently only in Mass. it is a possibility (atleast I think so) that people do not want to have to leave their homes to come to Son-Rise. Let's say for example that someone currently living in England is interested in working for/ at the Son-Rise program, but they do not want to move away from their own home to do so. Well, there's a person that could have been a teacher at Son-Rise and did not because he/ she did not want to have to move. Sometimes doing more work is worth it, because in the long run more people will be helped and more will be happy! Also, a volunteer in the Son-Rise program told me that, "I do believe the institute has a great philosophy and give encouragement to a lot of people but, the money situation is hard to swallow. It's more : than $20,000 dollars for an 8 week course that's more than $330/day. This 8 week course is a basic requirement before you can get certified in dialoging or son-rise facilitating." : Why do they charge so much? : I am unsure if this amount is charged to future employees of Son-Rise or not, but still it is an enormour amount of money!!! And all htis money goes t oa non-profit organization. In the end, where does all the money go? I have been told that Son-Rise has many volunteers. Again, where does the money go? If people pay $2,000 to go to a one week class, and there are about 50 people in the program. Let's say that 1/2 of them are there on scholarships, Son-Rise is making about $50,000. Most likely even more. I understand that this money also goes to pay for meals and housing accomadations, but by the same volunteer I have also been told that, "the lodging that has been refered to did not come with sheets for the beds all that you had to bring with you. Also, it was a community bathroom which shared by about 10 people." : I am very sorry if Ihave offended anyone, but in doing research many questions arise, and I need answers!!! I have tried to contact Son-Rise and I have left many messages. No one has returned my calls. I asked about the tax papers and was told that someone would get back to me, but a week and 2 more phone calls later and no one has. So, you need to understand that I am trying to gather valid information for my paper and it so far has been very difficult! Another thing that you need to understand is that I have unfortunately had to base many of my assumptions on one or two people. Since one person is telling me something I am going to trust that this person is telling me the truth and what he/ she is saying is valid! Please, if you disagree with anything that I have said above do not take it offensively. I am not judging this program, nor am I saying that I do not believe in it. But I do not understand why the program does not branch out and become more accessable to the people they are helping, or simply hire more staff members? My only assumptiong can be that if they were to branch out the demand for their program would most likely stay the same or even grow, but they will have to pay more staff members and when a program gets big, they will not be the only controlers and in the long run will not get as much money.
: I thank you all for helping me! You have brought up many good questions and comments and made me think a little more about my topic!!!
: Thanks Again, : Samantha
hi there...i have something to add. did you actually know that on the son-rise brochure they list four people's names and addresses and phone #'s and recommend them (they are in private practice) and i think they used to work at the institute. so i guess they are kind of "branching out" a little you can say. i guess those people aren't working for the institute though. so if they were just interestedin money, they wouldn't advertise those people and recommend them to families. that's my thought. ola
