I have a 5 year old moderately austic son and if/when he "isms" I don't worry about it. If people watch or become annoyed I use the opportunity to educate them. I have a flyer that I keep with me and I hand it out. It reads as follows:

MY SON HAS AUTISM

Sometimes Daniel's behavior is unusual. This can be surprising and distrubing to people who are unaware of his disability.

- we do the best we can. -

Then I give them a description of autism and general prognisis. Also included are web sites of autism.org and the Autism Society of America phone number.

I found this on a web and adopted for my own use.

Hope it is helpful.
