Hi All,

I wanted to share a really amazing breakthrough a little boy I occasionally work with has appeared to make this week. For background: he's 10-1/2, very severely autistic and until this week unable to speak. His family has been kind of running a Son-Rise program inconsistently for two years. He received seven rounds of secretin with only a very small improvement, mostly with his digestive issues, overall awareness and eye contact.

I visited with them yesterday after he received his eighth infusion and he was really talking for the first time ever! He has said a few word-approximations before but they quickly faded. Last night, he was making all kinds of verbalizations and if you listened really closely, they were actual words, phrases and even two sentences! It was hard to understand because he kept his mouth shut most of the time and just mumbled the words as he played/ismed around the room. However, all of the communcation I could make out was appropriate to what was going on in the room, things he liked or responses to us. I played with him a bit and he was the most interactive I've ever seen him, repeated several words and spontaneously said some more (though hard to understand). They were in a hotel room so it was hard to really get a session going but when I went to the bathroom, we went after me garbly saying "come back Gaylen." When I was leaving I told him that I really liked the way he was talking tonight and he replied, very clearly "I know."

This child is really large (about 5 feet and 130 lbs) so perhaps the secretin took more time. Also, his program has been more consistent lately so that could be it as well. His mother said he'd been vocalizing sounds alot over the past three days but she'd only made out about five words (which was exciting in itself given his history).

So.. just another example that it's never too late! We're on cloud nine with this one!
