: hi everyone...we are going to take my 4 year old daughter to the dentist...i discovered that 2 of her teeth in the back have huge holes in them. she's never been to the dentist and never would let us brush her teeth. she uses the tooth brush on her front teeth only but never the back ones. one time when she was laughing and her mouth was open very wide, i looked in there and saw those teeth. so we're going to the dentist tommorrow and i'm sure she'll need fillings. i would greatly appreciate any comments/suggestions regarding this topic. please enlighten me :) :) thanks guys, ola

Hi-
We have taken Nicko to the dentist a number of times (although he's been fortunate not to have cavities). The things that have helped:
- having him come first with me to see the office and get familiar before he went himself
- bringing his familiar toothpaste from home (instead of their gritty stuff)
- having the dentist be flexible about using the electric toothbrush as much or as little as Nicko would tolerate
- explaining to Nicko in advance the order of what would happen (i.e. first they look at your teeth, then they brush them, then floss, etc.)
- lots of praise!
- a reward or treat of some sort afterwards

Good luck! The dentist isn't anyone's first choice of activities, but your daughter may surprise you...

Jane
