How about enlisting the baby sitter to create some activities that ease him into giving up his things? Like she could set up a boxes or sehlf with his name on it and tell him that's his special place to keep his things so he'll always know where they are. Then, they can leave one thing there for a few seconds, go back and get it, then leave it longer, etc, making a fun game of it. If he's really hesitant to leave his things there, perhaps you could join in with your own box or shelf and leave your things as a model.
