It's remarkable that two of you encountered teachers who insisted on using PECS even when your kids were talking, or attempting to talk. They sound very rigid! In that case, yes you were both right to intervene. But don't throw the baby out with the bath water...in my son's working with a modified version of PECS (he pushes buttons on a recordable device with corresponding pictures on the device to show what he wants) we feel like we're getting a little peek into his brain, and seeing that yes, there is much going on there cognitively. We've always suspected as much, but how to reach it? With no language, and really almost no gestures (he'll pull on my shirt and look "pleadingly" into my eyes, so we know he wants something, but what?) it's almost impossible to "see" how much he knows. With our modified PECS we're finally getting an inkling into how much he knows now, and who knows how far he can go with this? I'm sensing in a couple of you who've had "bad" PECS experiences that you're doubtful it could lead to speech. I don't know what the answer to that is. Do you feel a child can become too dependent on PECS (or whatever) and not attempt speech? I'd like to hear any opinions on this as I value what you all have to say. I've gotten so much out of all of the questions, answers and "debates" on this board!!
