: We've had alot of sucess with Samonas Developmental Auditory Training yet not quite as much as I'd hoped for. It has made a huge difference though. It's different than AIT in that it is a program you can do in your home and involves listening to much nicer music and sounds than the AIT music. It also works slower, opens up the ears more gently and according to the folks who sold us on it lasts longer. It involves listening 5 days a week for 5-15 minute periods for several months. The cost is around $500 and you keep the CDs so can redo it anytime you need to without further cost.
: As for AIT, I have heard some mixed reports. It really makes a big difference for some kids and doesn't do much for others. Some say that the ones that aren't helped or who lose it usually have physical stuff going on like gut problems or heavy metals poisoning as well that interferes with it. Once you treat those and then redo AIT, it's supposed to last longer. Check out the Autism Research Institute's website www.autism.org/ari. It has alot of research that backs this up as an effective treatment.
: There is also a newer form of treatment for sound sensitivity being tested currently by the National Academy of Child Development called the Listening Program. So far they say it is showing to be very effective but it is very new and doesn't have any long-term effectiveness studies.
: You may also want to check into Tommatis. I've heard some folks have alot of success with this and it is supposed to be more gentle and less harse on the ears than AIT. It is alot more expensive though. : Gaylen
