What's wrong with TEACCH and PECS?
I've just seen one eight-year-old who previously had no functional communication at all but who could use six pictures to ask for the things she wanted after her first six *hours* working with PECS. For the first time in her life, she can ask for what she wants and the things that meet her interests, and isn't dependent on other people trying to guess what she wants, and she's very happy about it. Her vocabulary is now up to 10 pictures, and it's expanding literally every day.
Similarly, I've seen kids benefit hugely from having a visual schedule that explains what's happening next so that they can understand what's going on. What's wrong with that?
