: : hi everyone, : : i read a little (about 3 chapters) in greenspan's book on the floor-time approach. has anyone else read it? how is it that ifferent from son-rise, aside from things like the length of the sessions? has anyone been doing it along with son-rise? if so, which parts of it are you incorporating into the program? : : bram, you are doing such amazing things!! how can you find the time?!! :) : : take care, ola
: Thanks for encouragement Ola! It is tough some times, but I truly feel this is my "mission" if you will, and I don't want to waste any time. As far as this board goes, I only write at work (I work a 24 hour shift as a firefighter/paramedic) after dinner instead of watching TV. I love my job. We get paid to work out for one hour during the shift so that helps with stress release. Not to mention that I simply love the work. My wife is jealous when I go to work and I don't blame her! My job is almost like a mini vacation for me. All the things I love: Help people in need, stay healthy, and research autism.
: At home now that we have all our volunteers trained, I actaully have some time to do the Foundation/fundraising work. My wife and I have actually been going out by ourselves once every few weeks. We did not do this at all for almost a year. Very bad idea. I recommend to anyone that wants to "recharge" GO OUT! We all need that time away. The nights we go out is the only time we pay a volunteer to babysit. Usually the kids are about to go to sleep when we leave. Please do yourself this favor and make time for you! Your child will benefit just as much!
: Finally answering your question (sorry I rambled). I have read the book, but it was a long time ago so I don't remember much. We do Greenspan/Floortime : at school (about 6-8 hours per week) and Son-Rise at home. Actually, I just do Son-Rise at school to, but the methods have many similiarities. They seem to work well together for the most part. The only thing I don't like is that the teachers label Brenen's actions as feelings. For example, if he has a tantrum, one might say "Oh Brenen, I guess you are mad/sad/angry". I would guess frusrated, but I don't give it any label. I just say "I understand you want something, but have have to talk nice so I can understand you. When you are ready to tell me what it is, I'll be right over here". (I sit a few feet away). Anyway, the labeling feelings, the attitude (parents or person working with child), "playfully" obstructing what the child does, and telling the child we are not going to do certain things are some of the differences I have seen. I am not too knowledgable of Greenspan other than what goes on at our school. They may do it a little differnt than the book or others. Overall, I do like it. It is just second to Son-Rise. I don't know if this helped?! : Bram
hi bram...i don't think i need any more encourgement to go out...i do it too often :-)...i have amazing parents who babysit 24/7 if i need. my husband and i go out maybe once or twice a week (how spoiled is that). anyways, i too think it's crucial. i've never heard of a school doing greenspan/floor-time. is that something you requested or is it their model of teaching? well, it's alot better than any of the other stuff like TEACH,PECS,etc...so what do you mean YOU do greenspan and sometimes son-rise at school? now i see the differences between the 2 philosophies, thanks...ola
