Dear Parents:
My son is high functioning Autistic, and for the first time in 16 years he told me he was sorry last week.
One of his friends called the house and woke me up (I work graveyard shift), he told me later..."I'm really
sorry Mom, she knew I wasn't home and I told her not to call." I almost cried, but knew that would just
ruin the moment between us.
It is a hard road for our family. We have been through so much the last year. Allergy testing, psych testing,
occupational testing, Dr. after Dr.. Some tell us he is high functioning Autistic and tell us why. The Psychs.
want to label him a Manic depressive because they only believe Autism means low functioning. Adam
doesn't want to believe any of this stating he would know if he were Autistic.
We have thought about sending him to Boys Town for the help we can't get him here in Arizona. Tutoring
is so expensive, and the state doesn't help parents who are middle class. We worry about him when he
turns 18 years old because he isn't prepared mentally for the real world.
We can't afford to travel to anyplace to get him assistance, and he is to old to begin changing his dietary habits
we are looking for people who have been through some of this and can offer answers.
To Clare, Adam has been toying with the idea of writing to you, so maybe soon you will get a note asking
questions. I appreciate the support you have given me.
We did find out he is allergic to wheat and soy, and he has quit eating the burgers at school as we
believe they are filled with soy...everytime he eats one he is sick to his stomach. He doesn't eat the
cereal he used to eat, and is looking at labels because most of them give him diarrhea, but if the food
doesn't have an immediate side effect for him, you can't stop at 6'2" teen from eating what he wants.
I have gotten off the subject and apologize.
I just wanted to share that my son wheter it is a rote response or not, said I'm sorry, to me that was
priceless.
