Answering you questions about IVIG.

Intravenous Immunoglobulin treatment is actaully not that new. People with Multiple Sclerosis and other immune system dysfunctions have been treated by this. I do NOT know enough about it to be a good source of info. What I do know is that Dr. Gupta from Irvine CA did a study with ten kids and had "significant improvements" in at least 3 kids. One child has been cured, but it is important to know that this child had many other treatments going on at the time of the IVIG.

A new study of over 100 kids should come out soon. I believe you can get more info on the first study from The ARI (Autism Research Institute). I don't recall the web site. Another Dr. that I saw speak at the CAN conference in September also had infused 10 kids, one of which after 5 months "showed no autistic characteristics". The doctor we are planning to use has told me that he has done 11 kids and 3 have had significant improvements.

The product that is infused into the child is immunoglobulins (human antibodies). Again, I'm no expert on this but I'm told about 1,000 people donate blood. The antibodies are spun out and that gets infused to the child. The process time depends on the childs weight. For my son it will take about 3 hours. I have concerns about blood products, but thus far it appears to be safe. There are no guarantees of course. The infusion is repeated once every 28 days for six months.

This will certainly not help most of the kids, but it could be a great benefit for some. I believe most of our kids have an immune system that is not functioning as it should. Furthermore, I think a lot of the kids have a chronic infection of some sort that somehow causes all/most of their difficulties. Is that why this infusion of antibodies has helped some? Perhaps.

I don't know who would infuse in your area. You may want to find a DAN doctor and ask. If not, find an immune system specialist and present them with lots of info from the studies.

I will update you in the coming months about our progress. Any further questions, please ask. I'll do my best to answer if I can.
