: We just got Paul's urine test back from Dr. Shaw's lab and he has yeast. I was wondering what others experiences are with the Special Diet for Autism - Yeast Free Diet, how strict does the sugar restriction have to be? Also, what are your experiences with antifungal treatment.
If you are already doing the GFCF (Gluten Free Casein Free) diet, the Yeast Free Diet is not that hard. We only had to remove a few items from the list. I know removing anything can be a problem, but for us, it was not too bad. The sugar, in my opinion, is a big problem. Each child is different, so maybe for you it won't be, but we are very strict with it. We always check labeles. We even swithched brands of beans because one had 2 grams of sugar and the other had none. Our son's stool improved the most from removing sugar. One day he had half an orange at my brothers house (accidently) and he was runny the next day. Go strict at first, and slowly bring foods back and see what happens.
I would highly recommend the diet before trying the medication. We tried the Nystatin from apothacary and saw no changes. He may have been "cured" of the yeast problem just from the diet. I don't know as we only tested him one time. Also, before using medication, I would try acidophilus. I believe it is a great help to my son. Also try cranberry extract (from Kirkman Labs). I saw no changes, but it was cheap and Brenen really liked it. Furthermore, again, in my non-medical opinion, the yeast is only a symptom, or other challenge that autisic kids have due to a improperly functioning immune system. We just started Brenen on Colostrum, which should help immune system function. Kirkman sells it. According to one of the owners i spoke with, the liquid is a better choice. The powder it seems, is not getting the results the liquid does. I can't say the Colostrum has helped Brenen yet, because we just started last week, but yesterday he learned and sang a song in one session. He has never done that before. It is of course GFCF and tastes sweet. A little in his water makes it taste like sugar water. Try the alternatives before going drugs. By using the drugs without the diet or improving the immune system, you will not be able to fully rid your child of the problem. And as I stated, yeast in my opinion, is only one of the probably many other fungi, bacteria, viruses our children have to deal with. If you or any other readers would like me to E-mail a "treatment guide" that I have made, I would be happy to do so. hope this was some help! Bram Hornstein
