We've been doing a combination Son-Rise/NACD program for almost a year now and have found it very helpful especially in building Curty's ability to not only be in public places but participate in crowds, in his visual abilities, in his focus and overall ability to learn and communicate. Their method of teaching academics in very short, high-intensity bursts, with lots of input has also been really helpful. Although, I don't like the way they teach reading or some of their choices of texts but they've been very open to work with us in finding things we're more comfortable with or will work better for Curtis.

I think NACD is very strong at pin-pointing specific developmental breakdowns, processing difficulties, sensory issues, hearing and visual problems and giving easy activities to correct them or build towards higher functioning. However, they are very weak at building and keeping motivation and in inspiring language and interaction. They also have alot of beliefs that could be contradictory to Son-Rise (stopping isms). But since they believe that the parents know best, you can choose not to take on their beliefs and do their program in the way that works with your program.

I would not recommend them in the early stages of a Son-Rise program or in just starting out with an autistic child especially for children severely challenged. Like I said, they are very weak in building motivation and interacting and alot of parents that start with this program get really frustrated trying to get their children to do the activities before the child is motivated to do so. My thoughts is that it would be most helpful once the child is somewhat communicative, can understand "if you do this... you get..." (it took Curtis a year to get there) and is motivated to please those working with him/her.

Son-Rise is the very best at building motivation, interaction and communication of all the programs/methods out there. If you spend alot of time early on working on this, it is far easier to build in structured stuff once the child is ready and he/she progresses so much faster.

Once you've gotten the child's attention and motivation, then NACD can help you pinpoint specific challenges you might not discover and give you short, easy exercises to help. These can easily be built into a Son-Rise program.
