Need some creativity here. Patrick's teacher at school said that Patrick is just constantly putting his hands down his pants and she said this is totally unsanitary for him and the classroom. Personally at home, we don't react to it and just gently remove his hand from his pants and give him something else to do. He hasn't gotten sick yet! Although I differ on my opinion with her about germs -- these kids pick their nose and then touch the computer and put their hands in their mouths all day (a variety of "germy" stuff)-- I told her she was going to drive herself nuts if she tried to keep a germ-free environment. She said she wanted to brainstorm to come up with other ideas for this since she didn't want to say no constantly to Patrick about this issue. I suggested he was possibly looking for this -- wanting her to say no all the time -- maybe he thought it was great to get a reaction out of her about it. We tried clear packaging tape (putting a piece between his shirts and his pants) but this isn't working anymore.
However, we've come up with a few things and I was wondering if anyone else has had this come up and what you might have done about it. Remember this is a public school classroom and not our Option Room so there are limitations as far as "socially acceptable" behavior. 1. Overalls -- Patrick hates them along with suspenders. So this is not an option. 2. Duct tape. Maybe she just needed a stronger kind of tape. 3. A belt -- but this is only to work with jeans and he wears a lot of clothes with elastic waist. 4. Our volunteer just suggested every time she saw him do it, just to wipe off his hands with some antibacterial gel or something and not make a big deal about it.
I appreciate any suggestions.
