Hi Angela, If you are treating it in the same way as any other ism - and joining him - are you chewing your own fingers or something else? It might be an idea to not chew your own fingers but some other chewy object like the things you can get for babies to teeth on for instance. If you have one for billy too then you can offer it to him whenever he begins chewing his fingers reminding him that he might get sore if he uses his fingers. He might take to something that perhaps tastes too. I have seen teethers which are vanilla scented for instance. You could tell him stories about a character who loved to chew [a dog for e.g] and how he tried all kinds of objects to chew including his own tail, paws etc and how it turned out that he liked to chew raw carrots best!!! Or something like that! Above all, i think it's a case of being comfortable 1st then being wildly creative with it! Love and blessings, Shara.
: Hi All,
: We have been doing a Son-Rise program with Billy for over 18 months and have seen some amazing : results. He is now verbal and is just so happy, as well as cooperative and loves people. He plays WITH : his sister much to her delight as well as his. In the last couple of days he started to bite his fingers : something he did 9 to 12 months ago but we went with it and he stopped. This time it's far more extreme, : he's biting the skin from his fingers until they bleed and then he cries because they hurt him. He : gets really distressed if we try to put plasters on. We're trying lots of things to keep his hands occupied. : Scribbling, games etc but it's as if it's always there as a distraction.
: Any suggestions
: Angela
