Dear Kim, One of the ways I have helped Josh say longer sentences is to capitalize on his hyperlexia. Hyperlexia is a splinter skill a lot of autistic children develop when their visual skills are better than their auditory. They recognize letters, numbers, and words sometimes without comprehension, sometimes with.
Does Charlotte enjoy letters, words, logos, or movie credits? She could be reading without your knowledge.
I have a chalkboard in the room. When Joshua throws out a word of something he wants eg. "blocks," I go to the board and write "Mommy get blocks!"
Then I tell him I'm going to get him the blocks, but could he read this sentence so I'm sure that's what he wants. He thinks this is fun, so he reads the sentence. I give him those blocks so fast, the next time I don't need to write it, he says it on his own.
After a while, I ask for a little more or I vary it. "May I please have the wood blocks?"
It does'nt matter if he can't read all the words yet. He knows the format, thinks it's fun and tries by reading the words he knows and let's me coach him on the words he does'nt know. At the same time his verbal increases so does his reading.
