: Dear Gaylen, : I have read through your response to the hostile professor; and I would like to cheer you up for being so positive and objective. I've had a similar reaction when I contacted one of the lecturers in the Speech Department at Newcastle Univ. I asked whether it was possible to talk to students, in the theater after a lectuer for exmple, in order to recruit some volunteers at the start of our S-R program. My phone and E mail messages were left unanswered to start with, and when I insisted on calling she told me that she 'thought' it would be 'inappropriate'for me to talk to 'her' students about such a program!. When I asked whether she knew anything about it, I found that she'd only heard of this approach and she was afraid it might contradict with what she was teaching!. I volunteered to give her some materials including video tapes to look at, and she said just pop some reading material in the internal post (I work in a different dept. at the same univ), and I'll have a look!. I really don't know what kind of a Speech/Psychology teacher is that!. If I were her, and there is a program out there, being implemented by hundreds of families and proved to be helpful, Hell!! I would definately want to know about it. Any way I ended up having a cnoculding remark about open mindedness about behaviuor interventions ...etc, but Iam afraid I didn't sound half as positive as you are. I ended up also having a flood of responses from the same students when I approached them through the Union!. I guess what I wanted to say to S-R parents is to expect this sort of behaviour and try and make it useful if you can.
All the best wishes
Suad
