Why sorry? You don't have anything to say sorry for - in fact I really appreciate all the patience and energy everyone is putting into replying to my questions.
:However, I would like to point out that my son has had a day or two when he screamed all day long and we did not go into the room at all. I thought the neighbors must think I'm beating him, but fortunately most of them are aware Josh has challenges. I think it was related to illness, but he was using all his energy to deal with it and could not yet express it verbally. Now he can tell me, "head hurts."
I know this can happen a lot - kids who can't communicate when they feel ill (and who might also not understand why there are these strange and painful sensations in their body) can get terribly frustrated and distressed. It's actually one reason why I wouldn't want to lock a child in if they want to leave - maybe that child is coming down with an illness, or has a headache, or is very tired, or overloaded, and I just don't know about it.
:I also want you to know that I think you must be a wonderfully committed teacher for reading so much of the "parent" material and doing research on the Internet. Those kids and their parents are lucky to have someone who cares so much.
Thanks for the compliments, but I'm really not such a saint at all! I don't think I'm a very good teacher either - I know how much I have to learn. I just think these kids are totally wonderful (I understand why you are shamelessly proud of your son), so I'm privileged to be getting the chance to know them. I love reading anyway, so I end up spending lots of time reading about autism.
