Hi Wynee,
Doug here from the Milpitas Start Up. How amazing that your shift in attitude brought about these wonderful changes. It is truly fascinating to take the time to see what could possibly be so amazing about the ism, join and love.
One thing I wanted to relate about the raining is to really join in this, too. Although your experince may differ, when I do this I find that the most amazing interactions can occur. If I grab and throw the "rain" up into the air for the child and he is interested, then I can introduce the idea of throwing it up for one another, taking turns and stretching the interaction as long as possible. You may want to even prepare with some confetti to throw up in the air before you go in to the playroom.
Rather than look at these things as "isms" I find it useful to look at them as motivations. With that view it becomes comfortable to even introduce the "rain" yourself, since our kids motivations are the key to their world. Lots of people used to love confetti at football games, although I haven't seen it recently, so is it really an "ism?" When we take away the judgement about the activity it takes on different dimensions. Then following motivations allows us to build on skills as paying attention and back and forth communication. Not all communication has to be verbal, just a response to one another.
But of course, if none of this building happens and you just have fun joining that is just as valuable since it shows we love and accept our kids as they are.
It is so GREAT to hear about you having fun with you SonRising!
Doug
