I would paint the room a neutral tone. I would use a finish that doesn't shine (I can't think of the word right now for the non glossy finish, but don't use anything that will reflect the shine of the lights). Good luck! Best, Lisa
: I am from New York, but I am currently living in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I teach English here and I love the weather and the people.
: Back in New York I was a substitute special education teacher. I worked with children with all kinds of disabilities, but my favorite was autism. These children are just amazing!!
: I was also a volunteer in a home-based Son-rise program, and I learned a great deal from "Philip" and his mother. I would spend 2 hours in the room with Philip and then I would receive feedback from his mother. I did this for 1 year and I enjoyed every minute of it!
: I finally found a place here in Puerto Vallarta to start a program to help children with autism. Right now they don't have anything. This organization is funded by the government, but they don't have much money.
: I have been meeting with the psychologist and telling her everything I know about autism and how to work with children with autism. She is very appreciative and every day I show up, there are more people to listen to what I have to say, and to volunteer to help. (Nobody seems to know anything about autism down here)
: They have given me a small room (9' X 9') and want me to set up a playroom and teach them what to do. I will be able to spend a few hours each day there and they are making arrangements for me to meet 2 children tomorrow. (They only know about 2 children in all of Puerto Vallarta)
: I am going to paint the room and put up a shelf and mirror. What color should the room be?
: Also, Does anyone know if there are books or tapes in Spanish that I can get for these people?
: I also have to mention that these people are very poor, and unfortunately right now all I can afford to give them is my time and my knowledge. If anyone knows of any other ways to help these people, I would love to hear about it.
: Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
