Hi Everyone, I hope you can help me with this. Francesca's language is fantastic now in that she can say anything and anyone can understand what she says, but when it comes to actual communication and conversation she tends to scream her words. We've tried the approach of acting dumb when she screams and then responding quickly when she talks in what we consider a "normal" range but we're not getting anywhere. So I'm wondering if this is a necessary stage of communication for autistic children. It reminds me of when people learn to play a musical instrument....particularly violin or drums....you have to go through that initial stage of squeeks and squawks and playing too loudly before you gain mastery of the instrument. Have any of you experienced this?
I also wanted to share something funny that happened last week. The educational authorities came to talk with us about the programme and ultimately to grant approval for home-schooling. One of our helpers, Anna, was in the playroom with Cesca while this was going on and hooning around and playing with her, rolling on the floor, jumping around etc. Then Anna said that all of a sudden Cesca wanted her scrapbook to look at and to read( This is the book where we draw and write words of songs or stories ...."formal" work) The funny thing was that it was just at that moment that the authorities came to observe Cesca in her room and she stayed in that mode until they'd finished observing and then went back to the hooning around!! Aren't these children amazing? Needless to say, the exemption was approved!
