This year I requested that family and friends not get our son anything for Christmas (he's 2 1/2). The reason is I would rather them not to spend money on all these things I wasn't going to let my son play with anyways. Things that were electronic, video's, and the like. I have set up my son's room and there is not one thing in there that does not require him to do something to it inorder to gain something from it and most I have geared to require interaction with US. For the first time he seeks us out to play, talk about a christmas present! I've already gotten mine!
Let me add that acceptance in not giving gifts from our family members was no easy task. This whole commericalism and the guilt surrounded by "but I can't get him nothing". I said the biggest gift you can give is nothing right now. First off he doesn't get the idea of gifts to begin with and second right now I have purposefully put only about 12 things to play with. After a bit of "oh but I can't", "oh it's just not fair" etc etc... they conceeded and so did I - I happily told them they could get him clothes if they reallyyyyyy needed to get him something!
