Great job JOINING!! I think you're looking for ideas on BUILDING. I got the following ideas by thinking about how to turn the nose picking into an interactive activity:
- if you're talking about "what's up there", maybe you could put some kleenex up there, encouraging him to do the same so he could experience the same feeling, and talk about whether it's pleasant or unpleasant. You could color the kleenex with markers or paint.
- You could get a book about noses. I remember that there's a funny children's book on boogers that might be fun to read. Do a search for "boogers" on .
- you might walk in with a clown's nose on. Perhaps the clown nose could be put on a doll and the activity be transferred there. Maybe the activity could be deeper and harder on a doll, and talk about how to do it more gently on a person.
- you could make a game out of it, explaining that when he puts his finger up there, that makes you pop up and do something that takes a few minutes, like running around the room three times, or reading his favorite book, or doing a funny "nose dance", or taking him for an airplane ride. Maybe you could get him to do something when you put your finger on his nose, and perhaps this could switch to a very gentle touch on the cheek.
It took me a while to come up with these ideas, I think because I was initially very uncomfortable with this particular ism. It's amazing how creative you can be once you get comfortable - thank you for the exercise!!
