I have just started working with my 12 year old son in his playroom. I have filled the playroom with lots of fun things and so far he only chooses books which he wants me to read to him. He LOVES books! I am so glad that he loves books, but I am finding to difficult to make the books exciting. However, he doesn't seem to mind.
I have been encouraging eye contact before I begin to read and he has improved on the length of time it takes him to look at me, although his glance is still for just a second. I also encourage him to say "read" before I read to him (he is nonverbal) and he attempts to make sounds. Sometimes it almost sounds like "read"! Also, I have not had a chance to put up shelves to get the books out of reach so that he will have to ask for them. So having said all that, here are my questions:
1) Should I just continue this way for a while, since he seems happy with it? 2) Should I go ahead and put the books up high? 3) Does anyone have ideas to make reading more interesting?
Thanks so much for any help you can offer!
Monica
