When my son was between about 3 and 5, he used to do that alot to the point of often falling down laughing so hard. It went away about a year into our therapy program. Strangely, it came back very briefly after a Neurofeedback session a few weeks ago. This feedback stimulates specific brain points and sometimes you see a brief re-occurance of old symptoms as the brain reorganizes itself. Given this, I'd think it is highly likely that, at least in my son's case, the uncontrollable laughter was related to some sort of brain or neurological system issue.
Some things we did prior to the laughter sessions fading the first time was eliminating foods that he seemed reactive to, boosted nutrition, treated a pathogenic bacterial overgrowth in his gut and sensory integration therapy. Perhaps looking at what your son is eating or exposed to prior to having these laughing spells, having him tested for digestive function and adding some sensory integration activities might help. If you need more details on any of these, let me know.
I know what it's like during those laughing sessions. The only thing we found that helped sometimes was giving him squeezes or deep pressure during them and just going with him. Gaylen
