COMMENTS: Ben seems to enjoy school. Trisha does a great job keeping him "on task", building language and focusing his attention toward whatever we do. Ben has made friends and is accepted by the students in our class as "just a regular kid".
WE ARE ABOUT AS PROUD AS PARENTS CAN BE!!!
Background: Ben was diagnosed with mild to moderate autism at age 3. We began our Son-Rise program 1/98. He is now 6 years old and enrolled in an Early Kindergarten class with 18 typical kids who are turning 5 this fall. Trisha is his aide 8 out of the 14 hours he is there every week (she has worked in our program for 2 years).
We're meeting with his IEP team next week to discuss whether this placement is appropriate for him - we certainly do not see that being a problem. Next big step is to cut back a little on Trisha's involvement and see what he can do on his own.
Big changes since August: Ben is now coloring inside the lines, he is drawing bodies instead of just heads with appendages, he is transitioning easily from summer clothes to winter clothes, he is dressing himself (including socks and shoes on the right feet), he is wiping his bottom, he got a buzz cut with NO CRYING, he is using arrow buttons on the computer to play video games, he is writing his name and 5 other words, he knows and can write every letter, can sound out the beginning of words phonetically with about 5 letters, he initiates some conversation and responds to most conversation sent his way, he's playing games that require turntaking and counting number of spaces, ... he is AMAZING.
Thanks for letting me share the great news - here's to celebrating your good stories as well - 2K.
