Whenever I've seen kids hitting themselves, I always thought to myself that they must be mad at themselves, or trying to straighten themselves out because they were feeling too dizzy, or looking for attention. I read something by Donna Williams and she described hitting herself as a way to tell other people that she was in pain - that never occurred to me!!
