Anna,

Something that worked for us a few times in similar situations where the volunteer kept getting a rough response was to have the volunteer really change things up. For example, one of the volunteers came up with the idea to come into the room with a grocery bag full of newspaper cut up into confetti. She threw it up in the air, and then they proceeded to have a blast throwing the rest of it in the air. That really worked well.

Another thing that worked well for me when I seemed to be getting subjected to lots of verbal assaults was to come in with a few cans of shaving cream. I was in my swim suit, and I brought one in for Nick. We covered ourselves and lots of the room with shaving cream. We covered up one another and tried to make different figures on each other. We wrote on the mirror through the shaving cream. It really change the mood, and we had lots of fun. And the shaving cream actually helps clean the room up, too, when you wipe it off.

The real key seems to be to think of something with the volunteer that is a little out of the box for the volunteer and that they can have lots of fun with. Both of them can have lots of fun together, and rediscover that wonderful part of themselves together.

Doug
