Hello everyone,
My name is Colleen Kurkowski and I work with two Son Rise families in Madison, Wisconsin. I also work as a senior therapist with a group doing intense social interaction therapy.
One of the families I work with is Korean and they have a four year old daughter. Just recently, they have been accepting my offers for more information on autism. The mother is not fluent in English and is feeling overwhelmed. Her husband is fluent but continually cancels appointments, saying that she should take care of it. She has said this is slightly a cultural difference and would be fine if she knew the language better. I have introduced her to another Korean family with a child with autism and I am setting up a time for her to meet an English speaking Son Rise mother and discuss some of the issues on her mind from her feelings to diet issues. I also called to see if SONRISE was written in Korean, but it isn't. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has more suggestions about what I could do. After a school meeting today, she was quite upset and was doubting if she was a good mother. I tried to reassure her, but I am not a mother, so I do not know her feelings. Please, any suggestions from reading material, to contacts would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Colleen
