Thank you for sharing your wonderful realization! It reminds me of when we were at our intensive in July of 1998 and Nick really started to want a lot of attention after the second day of sessions. I said something about it to Gerd Winkler who was running our intensive the next day, wondering where in the world I was going to find the time for all of this new interaction. I will never forget what his reply was. He said isn't this exactly what you are working so hard to see? It seems that I had grown so accustomed to the way Nick was that I had to adjust, too!
A more recent similar event is with Nick's auditory processing. It has become a central issue at school where he is challenged to listen to long presentations. We have been seeking lots of advice about this and I have made this my biggest intention in helping him now. At our last group meeting one of our volunteers gave me that same kind of realization that you had. She asked for a history of Nick's speech development. It was at the intensive that Nick first started to let people read books to him. Before that he would take the book away and either flip through it himself or just throw it on the floor. So he has only really started allowing one of the ways kids improve their auditory processing a little over two years ago! From that perspective, he is doing amazingly well!
Once the challenge is put into perspective for me it becomes a lot easier to visualize and actualize what fun activities we can do. In my favorite visualization, I am picturing an elaborate treasure hunt in our yard at home with lots of verbal instructions. It will be a blast!
