Hi Chris, When I read your message I got really excited 'cos books have been such a big key into our interactions with our autistic son Aaron...especially the stories about Winnie the Pooh and friends! With these guys you can share so much about personalities i.e. Tigger and Eeyore and how Tigger choses to love and accept Eeyore with his negative attitude but stay happy anyway!
You can take a picture from a book and turn it into whatever you and John want!..e.g. "they went for a walk in the wood" and then you suggest that rather than visiting say "Kanga and Roo" they come across a rocket and visit whatever planet you and John choose! Initiate the role play and see if it "works". If not maybe try and break it down a little..If in the story whoever climbs up a tree maybe pretend to be a tree and ask John to climb. Wow..when John is present and attentive to books there is are so many opportunities..dive in there and find the child within you and enjoy! It is so great!
With love, Laura G.
