A quick summary of the milk/gluten thing.......A number of parents over the years have found that their children with autistic spectrum disorders seem better[sleep better or calmer or more communicative or other ways].In recent years there has been some interest in medical circles as to why this might be.Research is being done at Sunderland university{Dr paul shaddock and Dr paul Whiteley] and I believe in Norway and I understand A large pharmaceutical company has been looking into this and improving and marketing a fairly early urine tesy the Norwegian and UK teams have prototype versions of to see Which individuals might be susceptible. The theory that is being put foreward is that for some reason The protein in wheat[gluten] and milk[cassein] when only partly broken down into peptides may leak through the Gut lining and as these peptides are similar in structure to morphine[heroin] effectively a child/adult experiences a mild version of addiction to these substances.....'highs','lows','withdrawal', and'cravings'.Additionally When I spoke to a member of the sunderland team they said their urine analysis shows an abnormal breakdown product from gluten which they feel may be damaging to the Gut.....and thus I suppose make it leaky to other things. In practice we found when we removed Gluten from our sons diet he sleeps better,is more settled and less prone to getting upset over relatively minor things....The test we sent to sunderland on him showed results which they find correspond with Gluten sensitivity rather than Cassein. If gut leakiness and protein digestion is an issue for many autistic individuals it might tie in with other nutritional or dietary approaches. We came to this issue with an open mind but it has been clear to us that cutting out Gluten is a great help to our little fellow and for others milk or both are important. If you scroll back Bram put an excellent summary of all this on the notice board many months back.Love Jeanie
