It's great to hear that you want to do Son Rise for your special daughter, and also for yourself! It is such a tremendous way to be with a special child and help them grow.

We have lots of experience with the school system, since our son is in the fourth grade. What we have found to be most effective where we live, in California, is to find an advocate to work with. We did not ever have to hire an attorney, but an advocate will know what services you are supposed to be getting and how to get them. In our case, the advocate came from a nonprofit agency and was free! Start with the local chapter of Easter Seals. Although your daughter may be too old to be a client of theirs, they can probably steer you to a good advocate.

Much of the services that you are supposed to be eligible to receive are defined by Federal law, and should be fairly consistent from state to state. I don't think that is the case in reality, but your advocate can tell you what you can get. In California, I have heard of parents getting private school paid for if the public school is not set up for thier child. It sounds like you have not received the right mix of services, especially regarding the bus.

Our school system was not familiar with the Son Rise Program. We had the teachers, aids and special needs staff over to our house and had them meet with our outreach consultant for Son Rise. It is important that they understand the Son Rise way of working with you daughter, because it is not consistent with the more traditional behaviorist approaches.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to email me with any questions.

Doug
