: Hello!
: We recently took my daugter Lauren (4yrs) off any foods that contain gluten. She seems to be eating well but my concern is her appearance! Her eyes are all sunken in with dark circle underneath them, and other times they seem a little red and puffy. She has also been pretty cranky. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks a bunch!

Sandy,
I have not had that experience with our son when we removed gluten/casein, however we have noted dark circles under his eyes from time to time before as well as after removing these foods. I would suspect that this is from something other than removing Gluten and casein. Perhaps some nutrients are now missing that the child was getting from those foods. If that is the case then it would be wise to supplament with vitamins/minerals. Visit my web page bhare.org for ideas. I don't have a good answer for you for the redness/puffy eyes. Perhaps an allergy to something or as you said, withdrawl symptoms.
I want to comment on Kelly's ideas. No one needs gluten or casein to live on or for that matter to even thrive. The fact is, that the majority of our kids cannot properly break down these proteins. These partially broken down proteins act as a drug on our kids brains. Therefore, it would be wise to eliminate them completly. If a child was on heroin you would not just lower the dose! You would be sure to get it all out of the system. If you see any results with gluten removal (it can take many months some times) I would highly recommend removing dairy as well. Usually both are a problem not just one. And actually it is usually easier to remove dairy first, but there is no rule. With dairy many people have reported improvements within days. Again, I want to stress that if you are going to do "the diet" being strict is crucial. Many people with celiac disease do without these foods their entire lives with no ill effects. You do not need them. Anything that is in these foods can be attained elsewhere. I would certainly hope that one day my son's GI tract will be able to handle these foods, but it is a small price to pay for a mind that is more clear. While going GFCF is only a "bandaide" approach, it is the best that we have for now. Clearly we must learn to heal the gut and maintain that health before we can even be concerned about reintroducing these foods. Good luck with your diet. If you would like a menu that we use feel free to e-mail me and I will send it out.
Bram
