I just wanted to share my experience I had as a volunteer at the Start-Up in Chicago a couple weeks ago. I have been on this message board for a while now and have been running a Son-Rise program for a year and eight months now. However, I had never actually been to the Start-Up class. You see, my wife Kimberly went in December 98 and taped the program for me. So while I did not get everything in person, I did listen to the tapes three times. While the tapes certainly helped, there is nothing like being there.

I had the pleasure of working with some really wonderful people. Raun, Bryn and William presented the program and Kelly and Cia (I hope I spelled that right!) and a few other volunteers made sure everything ran smoothly. I must say that the week was far better than I expected. My thoughts before the week started were that it would be a nice "refresher" for me and it would be nice to help out in something that I believe in and know works. Well, I was underestimating what would occur. Yes, those things were true, but my shift in attitude was one that was noticed by more than a couple of people I know. One of our volunteers noted to my wife that I seemed to be happier, more hopefull, and positive. Our meeting the following week was the best one we have had in a long time. Brenen seemed to "improve" in a few areas as well. Hmm? Did he improve just because I had a shift in attitude and the way I viewed his future? Nah, it couldn't be that simple..... Could it? It must have been the techniques they taught me. Yeah, that must have been it. But wait, could my attitude have had a "ripple effect" on the volunteers that play with Brenen? OK, I think you know the answers to my goofy questions so I will simply say that if you ever get the chance to volunteer at a Start-Up, or any program for that matter, I would HIGHLY recommend it! The entire experience is incredible. Just as I tell Brenen's volunteers, "You will get far more out of the program then you put in". Thanks again Option Staff for allowing me the privilege to be a part of the Chicago program.
Bram
