We had a similar issue with our cat and other pets that we would get. I had a chance to talk with Jonathon Levy about it, and decided to give the cat to a friend. For our son, the cat was so compelling to follow around and be rough with, that Jonathon called it a moveable ism.
The most interesting part is that after a year with not having pets, and talking about having pets in the playroom and elsewhere, we got two mice. Our son is now very gentle with the mice and loves to talk care of them and play with them. We are also in the process of getting a guide dog for the blind, one that is a female breeder.
I know that we don't normally take isms away from our son, but the potential for the cat getting hurt is quite real. The consequence of that child and his or her siblings knowing that happened doesn't balance with the reasons for having the cat.
Our time without the pets was similar to our time of not going on vacations right after we started our program. Now we can successfully go on vacations, and I think there needed to be time without the added stimulation.
