Cliff note version: We started our program when Curtis was just over age 4. At the time, he had no speech, very little communication (would drag us to what he wanted, no gestures at all), ismed/sensory played/stimmed all day, totally avoided people, couldn't sit still to save his life, no self-help skills, you get the picture.
We did Son-Rise fully for two years and then gradually added other methods in as Curty became more focused, interactive, communicative and motivated. We now run a combination structured and child-centered, Son-Rise-type program.
Today, he is highly verbal, conversational (though still not quite age appropriate), asks a million questions every day, enjoys being with people and the social scene, but also loves his time alone, studying at or above grade level in most areas, very motivated to learn and often can fool folks into thinking he is no longer autistic. His last four evaluations put him outside the autistic spectrum however he does still have many challenges most of which are related to heavy metals poisoning.
We've been very pleased with the program. I do not believe Curty would be where he is today without it. Gaylen
