Hi!! I am a volunteer. I knew the little boy through a pool i went to so we did have some (but little) contact. So what we did was i started playing with him at the pool to help him with his swimming. Then when i went to the playroom, i first went in with 2 of the other volunteers (at different times). Then i went in on my own and we stayed in the playroom for probably about an hour if not more. It was really great!! I think going in the playroom with other volunteers (i didn't stay for the whole session) was really great because i was able to see different techniques of playing with Sean. With the families other son, Ryan who is also autistic it was much different. I observed from outside the room with Ryan. Then i went in for my first session with him. I think we were in the playroom for about and hour and a half. Good Luck!!
Monique : We are in the process of meeting and interviewing our first perspective volunteers this week. I am wondering how things will go when its time for them to actually be in the playroom with my son. (Almost 4: autistic diagnosis) I know from my start-up notes that you have new volunteers spend 15 minutes in the playroom to start and then train them for 30 minutes or so. Do you spend time with them in the playroom to start and withdraw as your child feels comfortable? These are people that my son has had no prior contact with. I would appreciate any shared experiences of how others have started their volunteers in the room.
