Dear Anna I am not sure what Roberts language is like? With Jo we have used phrases to describe how he feels when he wants to do certain things eg 'Mummy could you go out of her I want some peace and Quiet by myself' or 'I am feeling shy' if he does not want to talk with another child but we want to avoid him hurting their feelings with 'I don't want you'.He catches on tothese phrases fairly quickly so then if for example someone wants to stop playing we can use the same sorts of phraes to explain that they are feeling like he feels sometimes and we can remind him that he feels that way too sometimes.Also...if he is upset and I cannot change it I will try to give him a word for it eg'I know....it is disappointing...it was fun wasn't it'.Sometimes I cannot change the disappointment but I can teach him what it is and recognise itand sympathise with it.Of course it is easy when another activity is alluring enough to evapourate the disappointment.I'll be interested to see any comments/replies others make. Jeanie.
