I know of three people who began Son-Rise programs when their children were older -- one at 10 and two at 18. One has done a modified Son-Rise program successfully in that they've used the attitude and many of the techniques yet done structured teaching and behavior teaching as well. The one who started at age 10 did a full, follow-the-child approach for a few years and then eased in structured things and other stuff much like we have done with my son. The beauty of the Son-Rise program is that it is very easy to bring in other methods and tailor your approach to your individual child while keeping the respectful, open attitude.
Perhaps talking to these or other folks who began when their children were older could help give you some ideas if and how the program could work for your son. Let me know if you want to and I will e-mail you info on how to contact them privately. I'm sure the Option Institute would also be able to put you in contact with other families with older children if you asked.
By the way, I think it is so wonderful that you care so much about your son to work so hard to find the right program for him. Keep exploring all the options and trust yourself to know what is best. You will always be your son's best expert. Gaylen
