I agree with Monique. You know the child better than we do and can best determine if some non-verbal forms of communication would enhance communication or keep him/her from talking. There are actual studies done recently that using the picture exchange communication system (PECS) actually leads to more spontaneous speech.

Before you decide what to do, look at the child's specific challenges and what he/she responds to best. Like, if there is a motor planning problem or difficulty using hands, PECS may be better to use since signing could be really hard. That was true for my son years ago when therapists tried to teach him to sign. They used the "total communication" system where they'd sign and say the word. I think this was a bit frustrating because he had to do two very hard things at the same time. However, on the few signs he did learn, he did use the words more consistently. Be observant, experimental, keep the faith that he/she will talk, trust yourself to know and you'll find the best road to get there!
