: How long should someone working with an older, non-verbal child keep trying to work on speech before they decide to introduce a non-verbal means of communication (e.g. signing, picture exchange) instead or as well?

The first question, would be do you believe he/she could be verbal? What attitude
is presented to the child with regard verbal/non verbal communication? is my next. With regard signing/picture exchange, if that is how it is the best way the child can communicate with you now, then great, it is wonderful he/she is wanting to do this. Encourage any form of communication with you, but believe that, and show the child, that their is a more effective way for you to understand what they want, and that is verbally.
