running away! please help!

hi all, my 8yo daughter who has been in the sr program for about 1.5 yrs, has started leaving our yard and running through our neighborhood. we have come up with all kinds of locks to keep her inside and she can only be outside with someone else at all times (our yard has a short fence that she can now climb over). but, she needs to be watched constantly because she is very quick and if she gets out, she will book!!! we are working on getting a new fence, more sr time, we do more chaperoned walks, runs, bike rides, etc. but how do we deal with this if it does happen? she thinks its hysterical and truly enjoys it. we've tried not reacting, we've tried explaining why it is unsafe to leave our yard w/o an adult. today she ran into someones open living room, and not a close neighbor, but blocks away! she is so fast we just get in the car immediately and she's already down the street. help!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks!

Hi,
Have you tried playing this situation in your playroom? You could maybe act this out with some figures in an enclosed area. Think of all the fun things there are to do inside the yard and the fun people who are around at home to keep her safe. Tell her she can ask those people to take her places she wants to go and do lots of imaginative outings in your playroom.

I would also make the yard a no-go zone unless she is accompanied until you get that higher fence up. Safety has to come first sometimes.

Best wishes,
Suki
