Day One: Live from the UK Son-Rise Program Start-Up

From Bryn: I stood in front of 172 individuals. They were from countries such as the Czech Republic, Nigeria, Croatia, Australia, Bosnia and others. They practiced different religions, spoke different languages and were every shade of color. At a glance, they looked as though they they were extremely different from one another. Yet, they had more in common with each other than they did with most of their neighbors.

They represented children ranging in age from 2-33 years. These children had diagnosis such as Autism, Epilepsy, Sensory Integration Disorder, Aspergers Syndrome, Global Developmental Delay and others. They had come to attend The Son-Rise Program Start-Up because they wanted help for their children and most of all, as one woman said when asked why she most hoped to get from the week, "Hope".

This morning, before we began to teach, they told us:

"Since we started using the techniques he is more open to us, he has started to use words to ask for things, even in the last few days, he has started answering questions! He's more loving with his siblings and he has started to laugh again."

"Using the Son-Rise Program techniques that we learned from books and videos has helped Nathan to change so much. He has gone from no eye contact and all language gone, back to higher eye contact, and lots of words. He is now playful and cooperative - we are amazed!"

"We used the techniques for two weeks over the Christmas holiday and he started to speak. We saw him change so much, we decided not send him back to school, this is the program for us."

"Two days after I attended Raun Kaufman's lecture I started to use the techniques...two days later, my son, who is 'non-verbal' said, 'I love you'."

I told the groups that The Son-Rise Program I did with my daughter Jade when she was autistic was the greatest experience of my life. William and I feel so blessed to be here and to offer these families a glimpse of the possibilities that await them.

And so it begins...their adventure with The Son-Rise Program and with their child...

With so much joy,
Bryn

Son-Rise Program Start Up

From Kate Wilde: It is Friday and we have just finished our Son-Rise Start Up Program here on property at The Autism Treatment Center of America.

We had 61 parents and professionals attend from America, Australia, Sweden, Brazil, England, Canada and South Africa. All united by one thing, having someone they love on the Autistic spectrum.

It was so inspiring to hear their stories, learn about their children and to see their transformation as they took in the attitudinal perspectives and the concrete techniques that the Son-Rise Program has to offer. The youngest child represented was one years old, the oldest were 23 year old twins.

Parents came in on Monday morning, feeling scared for their child's future, lost as to how to help them and judgmental of themselves for not "being good enough" for their children. It is Friday and in the last class there was much relaxed laughter in the room. This came from the knowledge that they are not alone in this journey with their children, they now have 60 other supporters and friends in their life who are on the same journey, and the road map for their children, which is the Son-Rise Program with its developmental model and attitudinal perspectives.

They left with the confidence that they can help their children, and an action plan on how to do so.

I send thanks and great love and good thoughts to everyone I met durin the 2009 December Son-Rise Program Start Up.

With much love
Kate

From Kate Wilde: There is more you can do.

From Kate Wilde:
Yesterday I answered the phone in our book store, it was a Mom of a 10 year old autistic boy. She was calling because a couple of weeks ago her school had called her up to tell her that they wanted her 10 year old son to go on psychotic drugs. Why? Because they did not know how to handle his sometimes "aggressive behaviour".

So their solution was to drug him, to sedate him so that he does no "bother" them anymore. No concern for this boy's quality of life or the side effects of giving a young child such powerful drugs.

Here at The Autism Treatment Center of America when a child is kicking, pushing, hitting biting etc, we ask ourselves the following questions:
Why are they doing this?
What are they trying to tell us?
What can we do to change OUR behaviour to help this child change theirs?

Once we understand why our children are doing this then we apply a whole host of easy effective techniques to help them choose a different way of communicating.

If your child is being aggressive click on the link below which will take to you a blog about the common reasons why a child might be aggressive.
http://www.autismtreatmentcenter.org/blog/2009/10/intense-energy.php

Then click on this other link that will take you to a webinar on how the Son-Rise Program helps children who have challenging behaviour.
http://www.autismtreatmentcenter.org/media:video,22,0

If your school system or the care home is telling you that your child has to go on drugs because of his aggressive behaviour, think again, there is another way to help your child, it is called The Son-Rise Program.

We want to help you and your child.

With love
Kate

Being Hit & Punched and Love and Acceptance!!

Step 1. Don't Light Up Like a Christmas Tree!!
I just spoke to a mother on the phone this morning who wants to come to the Son-Rise Program Start-Up. One of the issues she wanted help with regarding her son, who is 5 yrs old, was the fact that he is aggressive towards her, hitting, punching and biting her. This is part of what I shared with her, which I thought would be a great reminder to you all. Enjoy.
  1. Don't light up like a Christmas Tree: Getting annoyed or frustrated and angrily telling your child to "stop it", "it hurts", "that's bad," etc., in most situations, will encourage them to do this behavior more. Do your best to be as low energy as possible as you do #2 below.

  2. Look after Yourself: Love and acceptance does not mean you sit there while your child "beats the crap out of you!" Part of love and acceptance is wanting the best for yourself and your child. Take action - stand up if you are sitting down, get a cushion or big ball and put it in between you and your child; if they are trying to bite you - offer them something to chew on, etc. Bottom line - look after yourself and help your child channel their energy into something that would help them and also keep you from getting hit, bitten, etc.

  3. Run your Son-Rise Program: Each hour, each day you run your Son-Rise Program will be time spent helping your child develop their ability to interact and socialize more appropriately, which in turn helps them handle the over stimulation of day to day life and especially those situations where they do not get what they want. Many families have reported that when they started running their Son-Rise Program their child's "aggressive" behaviors greatly reduce or stopped all together.

If you want more information on handling such behaviors go to our homepage at http://www.autismtreatmentcenter.org/ , scrowl down the page and watch webinar #13 call Aggressive Behaviors.

Have the best time helping yourself and your child.

Much love to you

William

Photographs of Your Wonderful Volunteer Team Wanted!

We are currently in the process of creating a video presentation of the Volunteer talk from the Start-Up program. When completed it will be put up on our ATCA website for families, who have attended the Start-Up, to re-watch and be reminded about "why to get volunteers?", "How to get them?", "Screening potential volunteers", etc. We are very excited about doing this.

As part of the video we would like to show photographs of families from all around the world pictured with their wonderful volunteer team. So if you have one volunteer or 10 volunteers please email us a fun picture of you and them together. If you want, but not necessary, your child could also be in the photo.

Please send the photo as an attachment to your email as a JPEG (jpg) file. In the email state your full name, your child's age and diagnosis, your location in the world (city & country) and how many volunteers you have.

Send the photo to me at: william@option.org

Thank you so much for supporting this video project and being an inspiration to other families.

With smiles and appreciation

William

The SON-RISE LIFE!!!

Enjoy this wonderful song written and performed with delight and enthusiasm by our Son-Rise Program Maximum Impact participants.

video

At our Son-Rise Program Advanced Training courses, each parent learns nitty-gritty specifics of how to help their child (or "children" as a number of the parents you see singing have 2 autistic children) but more importantly get re-energised, re-inspired and motivated for the next step in their Son-Rise Program journey.

I hope you enjoy this song as I did when they first sang it to me before starting class one day.

Smiles and celebrations

UK Maximum Impact - Wonderful Week

Wonderful and Amazing Time at the UK Maximum Impact Program
I have just returned from teaching the Son-Rise Program Advance Training - "Maximum Impact". It was incredible to be in a room with over 120 parents and caring helpers as they strived to be more accepting of themselves and their children, as they worked to understand how best to apply the techniques to help their child develop, and as they celebrated and delighted in each other.

It was a great week, the moms and dads who attended all left recharge, re-inspired and with clear clarity of purpose of where to go next in their Son-Rise Programs.

For all those that attended the program - moms, dads, volunteers, and the support staff - thank you, I left feeling inspired and honored that I was apart of this week.

Smiles and appreciation

Turned My Life Around in 72 Hours

Dear Ellen:

God love you because I do, big time. Whenever I read one of your posts on our Facebook walls, the energy, enthusiasm and love just jumps out from your words. But what I particularly note is how truly smart and helpful your comments are...like "I am writing Adam right now." Often, your notations highlight a program or a process or even give guidance. Terrific.

Love and appreciation, Bears

PS: Hey, would you want to join our bloggers on either/or/and OI and ATCA sites. These blogs now stream onto the OI and ATCA Facebook Fan pages so it gets to many more folks (1000 plus at OI, 1500 plus at ATCA). And your posts on my page, goes to over 1500. We want to recruit bloggers who are smart, savvy, fun, sincere, loving and have something to say...and who would do their best to post at least once a week...maybe twice if possible. Let me know what you think? Again, big love and gratitude

Oh Bears!

Thanks so much! It is one of my greatest pleasures to be helpful to The Option Institute. Everyone there helped sooo much in getting me to The Son-Rise Program® Start up (2 weeks ago I believe) for Emma... it was so perfect, a week of coming to terms with her issues in an honest way (that was a long time coming, huh (big smile)? And learning with totally clarity of purpose how tangibly I could help her. I came home and within 72 hrs had a temporary play room done, $600.00 in donations toward the real focus room, poster designed and at the printer.. when I know what I want.... had done 6 hrs of heavenly playroom time with my daughter, and had spectacular results--- stooling on the toilet for the first time! These are great things for us. I would love to help others to know that this program can help kids like mine, ones that would fall through the cracks, that aren't diagnosable (is that a word?!) but still have real issues that get in their way.. it's such a great program for our whole family.

When you walked into the classroom Thursday of that week, tears of joy streamed down my face.. yes, indeed, I was glad to see you, but also in that moment, I really realized that I had found a way (that was there all the time) to let my beloved Option Institute help Emma, my most precious gift.

I would adore blogging for you ... I will keep it in mind as I embark on this journey with The Son-Rise Program and Emma. I want to focus right now on getting my Son-Rise Program up and running, my business bringing in money, and being of assistance to Chris who has had a tremendous opportunity given to him ... his employer of 20 years berated him, stripped him of all is responsibilities and cut his pay 20%. The great news is that because of all his work at The Institute, in the middle of this he almost had to keep himself from laughing.... realizing it was truly all about them. What a gift. Anyway, how about if I just send you ( or whoever I should send it to) anything I write that's relevant, and you can use it or not as you see fit . I can't promise I will make time, but if I do, I will send on something. I hope this helps. I love all of you so much.. as usual please feel free to send a copy of this to anyone there etc. Deep, deep oceans of gratitude.

Love, Ellen

Son-Rise Program Start Up

Last week at The Autism Treatment Center of America we had 90 people come to learn how to start a Son-Rise Program. It was filled with mothers and fathers, uncles and aunts and professionals, all who were open hearted and wanting to help the special children in their lives.
They came from 22 different states in the USA, and 11 different countries, including Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil and Australia.

So if you are reading this and feel that we are too far away for you to make the trip, think again, wherever you are, you can make it here and we can, and want to help you help your beautiful child.

My love goes out to all you amazing people who attended this last Weeks Son-Rise Program Start Up, and I will think of you all as you set up your playrooms and work with your children on the Autism Spectrum.

Please don't forget to keep in touch and write and blog about your children and their Son-Rise Programs.

Much love
Kate

Honoring Our Staff

From Bears (Barry Neil Kaufman/Co-Founder/Son-Rise Program. I wanted to share with you an allstaff email I just wrote to our staff....who just go above and beyond, all year, to be loving and supportive for so many moms, dads, professionals and volunteers wanting to learn the Son-Rise Program in order to help children with autism.

WE HIT 90!!!
for the August Son-Rise Program Start-Up last night!

Dear Amazing Team:

To Jan-Marie/Rachel and Brian/Lori on the front/front lines with our families, to Terri and Erin...to Candy, Zoe, Dane, registration/accounting --- wow, you've rocked the roof and have brought to the Institute so many people for us to help and teach this week during the August Son-Rise Start-Up Program...moms, dads, professionals, supportive volunteers - to help them, their families and, most profoundly, their children. I have no doubt that the universe is smiling upon all of you. Given we have many Son-Rise Program Start-Ups, Maximum Impacts and New Frontiers programs each year in the United States and Europe (some with registrations in excess of 100 and 200 participants), your ability to individually talk with and personally support so many people continually throughout the year is nothing short of spectacular. And this doesn't include all the families that come each week for customized Son-Rise Program family intensives. Thank you for demonstrating so much love and dedication.

To Bryn and to Scott - your guidance, your direction, your management and your persistence with this amazing team is clearly demonstrated by the number of people we will be serving in the Son-Rise Program Start-Up today. Standing ovation to both of you.

Standing ovation to the entire Autism Treatment Center of America and Option Institute team.

I salute you! Samahria salutes you (she's saluting you right now over my shoulder as I type). I have no doubt, our Board of Directors and OMT management team, who will receive this message, will also be saluting you. You enhance our ability in the world to meaningful help countless families and their children.

PS: Big wow to all the staff, who like every program week, will show up with class, energy and love - as teachers (Samahria, Bryn, William, Kate, Carolina, Beverly, Clyde, et al.), as guest services and property management folks, as front office and back office support, in the kitchen, in our IT department, in worldwide communication and public education and in development- throughout the entire 100 acre campus, you all show up with dedication and excellence...and lot of love/big time. And the families we serve know that. Blessings to all of you!

One Joy of a Son-Rise Program Training Course

This photo was taken during our advanced training program - New Frontiers, in the UK.

I enjoy many things about teaching in our Son-Rise Program training courses, especial those times when parents, volunteers and caring professionals get together in small groups to brainstorm and support one another.

It is wonderful to see them come up with idea's to help another parent's child, to get solutions for the challenges they face, to encourage each other and ultimately to believe a little bit more in the possibilities for themselves, their family and their autistic child(ren).

As always it is an honor to work with all the family's and the individuals that help them.

Relaxing with a Possible Unwanted Future

We have just returned from teaching the Son-Rise Program New Frontiers training course in the UK. It was an incredible week. I was very inspired by all the people who attended the program - there were moms, dads, volunteers, sisters, an aunte, a pastor etc. all coming together to focus on loving their special child/adult and learning more specific techniques to inspire growth in them.

As in all the training courses there is time dedicated to helping families feel more comfort, relaxed and empowered as they run their Son-Rise Programs. This course was no different, and mid-week one of the issue that was talked about, dialogued and discussed was the "fear for my child's future when I am not here." It was beautiful to see the changes people made through facing this fear and allowing themselves to relax right now and then ultimately to be more present and effective when working with their child.

I remember their was a point in our Son-Rise Program with our daughter Jade, when Bryn and I stopped and look at a possible future where Jade was still special and required care - she had been isming and exclusive for an extended period of time. We talk, dialogue, discussed, cried and ultimately came to a deep sense of peace about it - and then the next day we got up and continued to run our Son-Rise Program, feeling more present and ready for the journey with our precious little girl.

Thank you all who attend New Frontiers - it was an honor to be there with you.

Love William
